Ken and I were driving through the lovely village of Menaggio which sits along the western edge of Lake Como, looking for signs for “Refugio Menaggio”, a hike up in the mountains situated above. Not finding the sign, we forgot about it and then changed our plans to head up the mountain in search of the village called Breglia. Breglia is my mother’s maiden name and I wanted to explore the birth place of my people. After driving up pretty much as far as one can at this point, we came upon Breglia and there we found the sign for “Refugio Menaggio”. A win-win, as they say. I’m not sure the people we saw in Breglia were “mine” but it sure was fun to see. After having a look around we hiked up the Mennagio trail so high we reached the snow! A perfect day.
On day two we took our sore thigh’s up another beautiful trail just above Tremezzo to the church of San Martino. It was about 40 minutes straight up on a gorgeous path and worth all the beats of my pumping heart.
The rest of our time was spent driving along the lake through all the lovely villages like Bellaggio, Graniate, Cernobbio and of course Como among others. It’s fantastically beautiful especially after many of the summer tourists have gone home.

I just went to Italy and was fortunate to fly Business Class on Emirates. I was excited to see the flight attendants wearing bright red lipstick and those cute little “pill hats” with the scarf draping down. I was not disappointed. I was however, surprised to see this kind and gentle monk and his co-monk flying the same flight but in FIRST class!? One would have to sell a lot of those prayer cards for that hefty ticket.

I was in Miami over the weekend and I attended my first Miami Dolphins game. And to the surprise of mostly me, it was sooooooo much fun. The Dolphins played the Baltimore Ravens, winners of the last Superbowl for those in the know. It was a nail biter! No kidding, I have nothing but stubs left. I was screaming, sweating, pacing, throwing my hands up….drinking beers, eating chips, it was more than I could have hoped for. Bad news, Dolphins lost by 3 points. Good news, during half-time, Gloria Gaynor sang “I Will Survive”.
